Kay Hubbard gets into the zone when she works.

"When I paint ... there's not a single, solitary person who can get to me," says the Pickering artist. "I'm just there with the colours and the canvas and the thinking about the light and the dark going on in the picture."

She's showing her work at the McLean Community Centre in Ajax until May 31.

Hubbard used to do textile work and tapestry weaving but watercolour painting "took over" and is her medium of choice. She has learned from many artists, including Pickering's Hi-Sook Barker and Shelley Beach, formerly of Pickering, who became "a mentor." see more

Kay was born in the heart of farmland in southern Illinois and now lives in Pickering. The stunning scenery of Ontario cottage country has combined with love of nature and early experiences of barns, farms, and fields of flowers to feed a keen interest in landscape painting.
